POWER SIBLINGS
Having siblings is probably one of the things I appreciate the most about life. I come from a huge family and have been blessed with cousins that I have adopted as siblings from both sides of the family. I can’t exactly put in into words, but having siblings just makes navigating life that much easier, they’re really the best friends you can ever have in life. I imagine this to be the same for a lot of celebrities, who are equally close to their siblings. Breaking into the industry is often daunting, but I presume it to be less complicated to know you have one of your own walking the journey with you. It is possibly even more rewarding when you both break into the industry and do extremely well. After all, a family that slays together, stays together right?
Earlier this year, Fashionista conducted a ranking of the most powerful families in the modelling industry, with the Jenner sisters coming top, and Kylie proving to be the most influential out of the two sisters. Kylie’s star power is undeniable! As young as she is, she has already surpassed older sisters Khloe and Kourtney with many believing that she is well on her way to toppling the star of the family, Kim. In addition to being a trendsetter, Kylie is fast cementing her position as a young business woman. The 18 year old currently owns a cosmetics company, Kylie Cosmetics, in partnership with the Nelson sisters (ColourPop owners). Kylie Cosmetics was introduced following the wildly successful launch of the Kylie LipKit. Just this week, Kylie launched her now sold out Kyshadow Kit, a pressed powder eye shadow palette, as part of her line expansion. Kylie is one person who has made lemons out of a rather sour situation. Many may recall that Kylie had insecurities about her thin lips, which led to her getting her now infamous lip work. Instead of letting naysayers get her down, she decided to turn her new found lip glory into an empire. $$$
Kylie’s older sister Kendall’s journey has been equally impressive. Kendall is low-key my favourite “Kardashian”, but I think my loyalty to Kim sometimes gets in the way. She is someone who has been so true to her path and dreams, since she was a little girl. From Paris and Milan Fashion Week runways, to Vogue Covers, Kendall has really achieved a lot for such a young model, and I think she deserves her position, regardless of who her family is. This year, Kendall was crowned the most valuable celebrity brand ambassador, in a list curated by social engagement tool Celebrity Intelligence. My favourite Kendall endorsements are her Fendi and Estée Lauder deals with Calvin Klein being my least favourite (long story). Do we have a #MdodaHive yet? Because I am obsessed with everything Anele and sister Thembisa are doing right now. Anele is known for her quirky and humorous personality, which has landed her at the top of SA Radio, hosting a primetime show on Highveld. In addition to headlining Multichoice’s Showmax campaign, the younger Mdoda sister also anchors top comedy shows around South Africa. July proved to be a defining month for Anele as she debuted her own Talk Show, Real Talk on SABC 3 as part of the channel’s mandate to roll out local content. I’ve watched two episodes of the show and I’m a huge fan of the unconventional themed topics and Real Talk can only grow from here onwards. The Perfect Thembisa is fast becoming one of my favourite TV presenters to watch. Before landing the major presenting job on Mzansi Magic’s primetime favourite, Our Perfect Wedding, Thembisa had a recurring role on the channel’s now cancelled telenovela, The Road. But it wasn’t until seeing her in action on the show famous for showcasing the country’s most outrageous weddings, that I fell in love with her charisma. I make sure I tune in every Sunday just to see what she is wearing and I die every time she pulls the “Masambeni” line. I think it’s safe to say Thembisa has a stan in me. I can’t wait to see more brands investing in her, as I believe in her authentic talent. The biggest issue in our country when it comes to celebrity endorsements is the reluctancy from brands to nurture and elevate new talent. Brands also need to heed the call and #OpenUpTheIndustry.
I’m also quite obsessed with newbies on the block, Halle and Chloe, the sibling duo that was discovered by Queen Yonce. All it took was for then 13 and 15 year old sisters to post their rendition of the famous singer’s hit song “Pretty Hurts”, which soon went viral on their YouTube Channel Chloe x Halle. Two years later, the sisters are signed to the singer’s Parkwood Entertainment label for a deal estimated to be worth $1 million. My other favourite power siblings are Locnville, who have just released their coming of age album, Taste The Weekend, Jaden and Willow Smith as well as Gigi and little sister Bella Hadid, who are all dominating the world of fashion and endorsements today.
